Domain names are purchased and registered via organizations called domain registrars. Domain registrars are accredited authorities which govern the purchase, registration and renewal of domain names. Accreditation is provided by a not-for-profit organization called ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers).

With this in mind, not all web hosting or email providers are domain name registrars.
